FoodHandlerGear

Free Food Safety Study Resources for Teachers and Librarians

Quick answer: Everything on this page is free to use in class, link from a library guide, print and share. Students don't create an account or give an email to take a test, the tests work on phones and Chromebooks, and every answer comes with a plain-language explanation. There are versions for 13 states, tests in Spanish, and alcohol server tests for bartending and serving classes.

This page is for culinary arts and hospitality instructors, CTE and ProStart teachers, adult education and ESL programs, job-training staff, and the librarians who build study guides for them. It collects every free study tool on FoodHandlerGear in one place, grouped the way a class uses them.

At a glance

  • Free, no sign-up. No accounts, no student names or emails.
  • Private by design. Tests run in the student's browser, and the answers they pick are never sent to us. We count anonymous events such as “test finished” and the score; our privacy policy lists exactly what.
  • Explanations, not just scores. Every question explains the rule behind the right answer and links to the guide section that covers it.
  • English and Spanish. A Spanish version of the main test, four state tests, the manager test and three alcohol server tests.
  • Free to print and share. The cheat sheet, the student handout and the food safety logs are PDFs made for printing.

Food handler practice tests

The main test draws 30 questions from a bank of 98 and shuffles them every time, so a class can take it more than once and see different questions. Its quick 10-question round works well as a warm-up. The four topic quizzes match the units most food safety courses teach.

State practice tests and guides

Each state test mixes questions on that state's own rules (deadlines, card validity, who issues the card) with the core food safety questions. The guides explain the rules in plain language and cite the statute or health department page they come from.

Teaching in another state? The main test covers the FDA Food Code rules that every state's exam is built on, and our requirements by state page covers the rest.

Food manager (ServSafe-style) prep

For culinary programs that prepare students for a certified food protection manager exam such as ServSafe Manager: a 47-question practice test on HACCP, cooling, employee health and sanitizing, in English and Spanish, plus the guide to how manager certification works.

In Spanish

For ESL, adult education and bilingual classrooms. Each Spanish page links to its English version, so students can switch and compare.

Alcohol server tests for bartending and serving classes

Practice tests for the state alcohol server certifications, each built from the official program's rules: Texas TABC, California RBS, Illinois BASSET, Washington MAST, Oregon OLCC service permits, Nevada's alcohol awareness card, Pennsylvania's RAMP training and South Carolina's alcohol server certificate. TABC, RBS and BASSET also have Spanish versions.

Printables for the classroom and the kitchen lab

  • Student handout (PDF): one page with QR codes to the English and Spanish practice tests, study tips and the numbers every exam asks. Hand it out on the first day or post it by the lab sink.
  • Food handler cheat sheet (PDF): every number the exam asks about on one page: temperatures, cooling times, sanitizer strength, handwashing and date marking.
  • Free food safety logs (PDF): temperature, cooling, receiving, cleaning and calibration logs. Useful for teaching kitchens that keep the same records a restaurant does.
  • Exam glossary: plain-language definitions of every term on the exam, from TCS food to the Big 6 illnesses.

Ways teachers use it

  • Pre-test. Run the quick 10-question round before the unit starts to see what the class already knows.
  • Exit ticket. Close a lesson with the matching topic quiz; students read the explanations for anything they missed.
  • Exam week. Students take the full 30-question test until they score 80% or more, then print the cheat sheet for a last review.
  • Bilingual classes. Students take the test in the language they study best in, then try the other version.

How this site is funded

The tests, guides and printables are free and will stay free. The site is paid for in three ways, all of them disclosed where they appear:

  • Affiliate links. Some pages recommend products on Amazon or food handler courses from providers. If someone buys through those links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to them. Product links are marked “(paid link)”.
  • Our own study products. Some test pages mention the Food Handler Card Audio Cram, our own audio review session published by Kanti Press and sold on Amazon. Nobody needs it to use the free tests.
  • A kit for restaurant owners. We sell an editable Food Safety Plan Kit for owners and managers. It is not aimed at students.

Nothing on the site is sponsored, and no one pays to be recommended. Our affiliate disclosure and how we research pages have the details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FoodHandlerGear really free for classroom use?

Yes. Every practice test, guide and printable is free, with no trial period and no account. You can link to any page, project it in class and print the PDFs for students.

Do students need an account or an email address?

No. Students open the test and start. Their answers stay in their browser and are never sent to us.

Are these tests the same as the real food handler exam?

No practice test is the real exam, and ours aren't affiliated with any certification provider. They cover the same FDA Food Code topics the accredited exams test, and the state versions add each state's own rules, so they make good practice for the content and the multiple-choice format.

Is there a version in Spanish?

Yes. There is a Spanish food handler practice test, Spanish versions of the California, Texas, Florida and Illinois tests, a Spanish food manager test and Spanish TABC, RBS and BASSET tests. The Spanish guides page lists them all.
