This free practice test covers the topics that appear on nearly every U.S. food handler exam: time and temperature control, personal hygiene, cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitizing, allergens, thermometers, and pests. Answer each question, read the explanation, and use the links to review anything you missed. No signup, no email — just practice.

How it works: 30 multiple-choice questions (or a quick 10), drawn from a bank of about 100. Most real exams pass you at about 70%, so aim for 21 of 30. Questions and answer order are shuffled every time, and your answers and score stay in your browser; they are never sent to us.

Need the actual card? A practice test isn't it: the card comes from an accredited course and its test. Food Handler Classes (EduClasses) ($7.00) · 360training (Learn2Serve) ($9.99)

Prices from the providers' sites, October 1, 2026. We may earn a commission. Read our disclosure.

Practice for your state

These tests add questions on one state's own rules (deadlines, fees, how long the card lasts, and who's exempt) to the core food safety questions:

What this test covers

  • Time and temperature: the 41°F–135°F danger zone, minimum cooking temperatures, two-stage cooling, reheating to 165°F, hot and cold holding, safe thawing.
  • Personal hygiene: handwashing, glove rules, jewelry, wounds, and when a sick worker must stay home.
  • Cross-contamination: refrigerator storage order, color-coded boards, FIFO and date marking, allergen cross-contact.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing: the clean-rinse-sanitize-air-dry sequence, sanitizer concentrations, and matching test strips.
  • Thermometers: ice-point calibration and probe vs infrared.
  • Pests and HACCP basics.

Is this the real exam?

No. Every training provider writes its own questions, and states and counties set their own passing scores. This test is built from the same FDA Food Code concepts those exams draw on, so if you can pass it comfortably you're in good shape — but you still need to take the official course your employer or health department requires. Our requirements-by-state guide explains who accepts what, and how long it takes covers the timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will passing this practice test get me a food handler card?

No. This is a study tool, not the official exam. Your actual card comes from completing an accredited food handler course and passing its test — this practice test just tells you whether you're ready for it.

What score should I aim for on the practice test?

Aim to score 70% or better — at least 21 out of 30 — consistently, several attempts in a row. Most real exams pass you at about 70%, so if you're clearing that bar here with room to spare, you're ready.

Do I need to create an account or give my email?

No. There's no signup and no email required. Your answers stay in your own browser and are never sent to us. Google Analytics only counts things like whether a test was finished and the overall score, so we can see which tests help.

Why are the questions different every time I retake it?

Questions and answer order are shuffled from a bank of about 100 every attempt, so retaking it actually tests what you know instead of what you memorized. You can retake it as often as you like — every round is fresh.

How is the real exam different from this practice test?

The real exam is a paid, official test (usually around 40 questions) taken through an accredited provider, and it counts toward your card. This practice test is untimed, free, and built for learning — every answer comes with a plain-language explanation and a link to the guide behind it.
