Food Handler Practice Exam Pack: 100 Questions to Take on Paper

Our free online practice test is the quickest way to check yourself. Some people study better on paper, though: a pencil, a timer, and no phone. The Food Handler Practice Exam Pack is 100 questions laid out as four printable exams of 25, with the answer key at the back. It comes from Kanti Press, the team behind Food Handler Card Audio Cram, and turns that audiobook's 100-question rapid-fire drill into multiple-choice exams.

The first page of Practice Exam 1: questions on the danger zone, holding time, and cooking temperatures, each with four choices
Each exam is 25 questions with four choices, and a line for your score and time.
The first page of the answer key: the correct letter and answer for each question, with the book's answer quoted under it
The answer key gives the letter, the answer, and the book's answer in its own words.

What's in the Pack

  • Four practice exams of 25 questions. Exam 1 covers time and temperature and hygiene basics; Exam 2, cross-contamination, allergens, and hygiene; Exam 3, hygiene, cleaning and sanitizing, pests, and receiving; Exam 4, storage, kitchen scenarios, and questions about the test itself.
  • Four choices per question, with one best answer, like most real food handler exams.
  • An answer key at the back with the correct letter and answer for every question, quoting the book's answer, with the reasoning for the trickiest questions.
  • Two ways to use it. Timed mode: about 30 minutes per exam, and 18 of 25 (about 70%) counts as a pass. Review mode: work an exam untimed, check the key, and retake it a few days later.
  • A 25-page US Letter PDF. Print the whole pack, or one exam at a time.

The numbers come from the FDA Food Code: the 2022 edition's numbers, which didn't change in the 2026 edition. One place the pack follows the exams rather than the code: it gives 100°F as the handwashing water temperature, the answer most food handler exams expect, and the key notes that the Food Code itself asks a handwashing sink for at least 85°F.

Try Three Questions

Three questions from the pack, as printed:

  1. Leftover chili has been cooling for 3 hours and is still at 80°F. What should you do?
    A. Reheat it to 165°F and serve it
    B. Chill it quickly and serve it tomorrow
    C. Keep cooling it until it reaches 41°F
    D. Throw it out
  2. A cook handles raw chicken, then puts on the same gloves to make a salad. What is wrong?
    A. Nothing is wrong, as long as the gloves are not torn
    B. The salad should simply have been made before the chicken
    C. She only needs hand sanitizer before starting the salad, as long as the gloves look clean and intact
    D. Gloves must be changed when switching tasks, and hands washed before the new gloves go on
  3. Cooked rice was left on the counter for 5 hours. It smells fine. Serve it or throw it out?
    A. Serve it — if it smells fine, it is safe to serve to customers
    B. Reheat it to 165°F and serve it
    C. Throw it out — it exceeded the 4-hour limit
    D. Chill it quickly and serve it tomorrow
Show the answers

20: D. The chili missed the 2-hour limit to cool from 135°F to 70°F, so the safe call is to throw it out. 47: D. Gloves are for one task; change them and wash your hands between raw meat and ready-to-eat food. 82: C. Five hours is past the 4-hour limit, and smell is not a safety test.

How It Compares to the Free Practice Test

The free online test draws 30 questions from a bank of about 100, shuffles them every time, and explains each answer on screen as you go. Use it as often as you like. The pack is the paper version of the same habit: fixed exams you can print, mark up, time, and retake. Its 100 questions come from the book's drill, not from the online test's bank, so it adds a second set of questions in a different wording. If you'd rather read than test yourself, every online question is also printed with its answer in our food handler test questions and answers.

What It Isn't

  • It is not the real exam. Every accredited provider writes its own questions, and the pack isn't affiliated with or endorsed by any certifying body, training provider, or government agency. You still need to pass the course your state or county accepts; our requirements-by-state guide explains which one that is.
  • It is not a promise that you will pass. It is practice. How you do on test day is up to you.
  • It does not cover state-specific rules such as deadlines, fees, or how long your card lasts. Our free state practice tests do, for California, Texas, Illinois, and 10 more states.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the pack the same as the free practice test?

No. The free online test draws from our own bank of about 100 questions and explains each answer on screen. The pack's 100 questions come from the 100-question drill in Food Handler Card Audio Cram, set as four printable exams with four choices each and an answer key at the back.

What topics does the pack cover?

Time and temperature control, cross-contamination and allergens, personal hygiene and handwashing, cleaning and sanitizing, pests, receiving, and storage: the FDA Food Code topics that nearly every U.S. food handler exam tests. It also has a few questions on the test itself, such as retakes and how long a card usually lasts.

Will the pack help me pass my food handler test?

It gives you 100 questions of practice on the topics those tests cover, with the answers to check yourself against. It is not affiliated with any exam provider and does not guarantee a result. Food safety rules vary by state and county, and where your local rules differ, follow your local rules.

What format is the pack?

A 25-page PDF sized for US Letter paper. Open it on a phone or computer, or print it. The answer key starts after Exam 4, so you can print the exams without the answers.
