ServSafe Alternatives: Cheaper Food Manager Exams Compared

Quick answer: you don't have to take ServSafe. Any food protection manager exam accredited by ANAB under the Conference for Food Protection standard earns the same Certified Food Protection Manager credential, and most health departments accept all of them. Six accredited alternatives cost less than ServSafe's $99 online-proctored exam: EduClasses ($65), 360training ($69.99), StateFoodSafety ($76), Always Food Safe ($76), NRFSP ($81.99), and Trust20 ($90). The cheapest isn't always the best fit: they differ on retakes, scheduling, devices, and languages.
Our picks
- Lowest price: EduClasses, $65 with a Prometric proctor, or $120 with a course. Read our Food Managers Certification (EduClasses) Review: Is the $65 Exam Legit? for the catches.
- Two attempts included: 360training, $69.99, with a free second attempt clearly stated.
- Test tonight, on a Chromebook: Always Food Safe, $76, with no appointment needed and Chromebook support.
- Most languages: NRFSP, with exams in five languages.
- Stick with ServSafe if your employer or health department asks for it by name.

Is a ServSafe Alternative Accepted?
Usually, yes. The FDA Food Code asks the person in charge to pass a test that is part of an accredited program (§2-102.12), and doesn't name a brand. The Conference for Food Protection's February 24, 2026 list of ANAB-accredited manager certification organizations includes all seven programs on this page: ServSafe (National Restaurant Association Solutions), NRFSP, StateFoodSafety, Learn2Serve (360training), Always Food Safe, Trust20, and EduClasses.
The exceptions are local. New York City requires its own NYC Food Protection Certificate: Free Course, $24 Exam, and Who Needs It. Some cities and counties keep their own approved lists: Philadelphia, for example, doesn't list every provider. Ohio and Minnesota require a state-approved course on top of the exam. And some employers simply prefer ServSafe. Check our state guide for your state, linked from the Food Manager Certification: How to Pass the Exam, or ask your health department before you buy.
One name to avoid: older guides list Prometric's food manager exam, but Prometric isn't on the February 2026 list and no longer offers its own exam. It still proctors EduClasses' exam at its test centers.

How They Differ
Retakes
This matters more than a few dollars of price. 360training includes two attempts, then a 90-day wait after a second failure. Always Food Safe includes two attempts. EduClasses advertises two, but its candidate manual and issuance policy say one, with another issued through support. ServSafe, NRFSP, StateFoodSafety, and Trust20 charge the full price again for every attempt. ServSafe, NRFSP, and Trust20 also limit you to two attempts in 30 days, then a 60-day wait, and four attempts a year.
Scheduling and Devices
Most remote exams are booked appointments. Always Food Safe and Trust20 let you start without one. NRFSP charges $8 to $12 extra if you book less than 72 hours ahead, StateFoodSafety charges $48 to rebook a missed appointment, and EduClasses appointments can't be changed within 5 days. 360training's proctors work weekdays only. Only Always Food Safe says it supports Chromebooks; ServSafe, NRFSP, and StateFoodSafety exclude Chromebooks and tablets, and EduClasses' Prometric software excludes tablets.
Test Centers and Paper Exams
Prefer a test center? ServSafe uses Pearson VUE ($108.99), NRFSP uses Pearson VUE ($81.99), StateFoodSafety uses PSI ($88), and EduClasses uses Prometric ($65). In person with a local proctor, NRFSP's exam is $36.99 and a ServSafe access code is $38.99, plus the proctor's own fee.
Exam Format
- ServSafe: 90 questions (80 scored), 2 hours, 70% to pass.
- NRFSP: 80 questions, 2 hours, a scaled score of 75 to pass (not a percentage).
- StateFoodSafety: 75 questions, 2 hours, 750 of 1,000 to pass.
- 360training: 95 questions (75 scored), 90 minutes; its own pages give different passing scores.
- EduClasses: 75 questions (70 scored), 70% to pass; its documents say 90 or 120 minutes.
- Always Food Safe: 2 hours, 70% to pass; its pages say 80 or 90 questions.
- Trust20: 80 questions, 2 hours.
All of them test the same FDA Food Code material, so the same studying works for any of them. Our free Food Manager Practice Test covers it.
Refunds
Strictest: ServSafe and Trust20, whose online exams are non-refundable. 360training refunds within 72 hours if you haven't started the exam, and EduClasses within two weeks, but only for a duplicate or incorrect purchase. StateFoodSafety is the most flexible, refunding unused products within 30 days, though not the proctor fee once you've scheduled. We couldn't find Always Food Safe's refund policy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an alternative to ServSafe Manager?
Yes. NRFSP, StateFoodSafety, 360training (Learn2Serve), Always Food Safe, Trust20, and EduClasses all offer ANAB-accredited food protection manager exams on the Conference for Food Protection's February 2026 list, and all cost less than ServSafe's $99 online-proctored exam.
Is NRFSP as good as ServSafe?
For certification, yes: both are ANAB-accredited and lead to the same Certified Food Protection Manager credential, valid up to 5 years. NRFSP costs $81.99 online versus ServSafe's $99, and $36.99 with an in-person proctor. ServSafe is better known by name.
What is the cheapest food manager certification?
In our October 12, 2026 check, EduClasses at $65 with a proctor, followed by 360training at $69.99. NRFSP is $36.99 with an in-person proctor, who may charge a separate fee.
Do all states accept ServSafe alternatives?
Most states accept any ANAB-accredited manager exam. Exceptions are mostly local: New York City requires its own certificate, some cities keep their own lists, and Ohio and Minnesota require an approved course as well. Check with your health department first.
Is the ServSafe Manager exam harder than other manager exams?
They cover the same Food Code material at a similar length; ServSafe has 80 scored questions and a 70% pass mark. We haven't found an official comparison of pass rates between providers.
Bottom Line
ServSafe is the best-known name, but not the only accredited one, and at $99 it's the most expensive. Unless your employer or city names it, an accredited alternative saves $9 to $34 on the exam and up to $59 with a course. Pick by retakes and scheduling, not just price, confirm your health department accepts it, and practice first with our free Food Manager Practice Test.
