Quick answer: a food protection manager exam with online proctoring costs about $65 to $99, depending on the provider; the lowest we found is EduClasses at $65 . A course and exam bundle runs about $109 to $189. ServSafe, the best-known brand, charges $99 for its online-proctored exam and $179 for the course and exam together. Most certificates last 5 years, so it works out to roughly $13 to $38 a year.

A few details the table can't show:

  • Testing in person costs less at some providers. NRFSP's exam is $36.99 with an in-person NRFSP proctor (the proctor may charge separately), and a ServSafe exam access code is $38.99 if you test with a ServSafe proctor, whose fees are extra. ServSafe also offers its $99 exam at Pearson VUE test centers.
  • StateFoodSafety at a test center costs $12 more than online: $88 for the exam, or $146 with the course.
  • ServSafe prices by format: the online course alone is $125, and the course with an exam access code for an in-person proctor is $152.95.
  • Prometric, which some older guides list, isn't on the Conference for Food Protection's February 2026 list of accredited manager certification organizations, so we left it out.

Before you pay, confirm that your state or local health department accepts the specific exam; our Food Manager Certification: How to Pass the Exam explains which exams are accredited.

Some states change the math. Ohio requires a state-approved course on top of the exam, so budget for both (see our Ohio guide); Las Vegas adds a $25 SNHD manager card (Nevada guide); and some Colorado health agencies proctor the exam for $38 to $75 (Colorado guide).

Local fees and public classes matter too. Philadelphia adds a $30 city certificate (Pennsylvania guide), Massachusetts restaurants also need an allergen awareness certificate (Massachusetts guide), Maryland counties charge $30 to $73 for their own manager card (Maryland guide), Minnesota adds a $50 state certificate (Minnesota guide), and Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky issue their own certificates for $30 to $100 (Kentucky guide). On the cheaper side, the Mid-Michigan District Health Department trains up to three people per establishment free each year (Michigan guide), Virginia Cooperative Extension proctors the ServSafe exam alone for $85 to $90 (Virginia guide), NC State Extension's online course with an in-person exam is $135 (North Carolina guide), Purdue Extension gives the ServSafe exam alone for $65 (Indiana guide), Salem County's ServSafe class is $120 with the exam (New Jersey guide), Clay County's manager class with the exam is $55 (Missouri guide), and Moraine Park Technical College's manager class is $95 (Wisconsin guide). In the Southeast, Alabama Extension's ServSafe class is $150 with the exam (Alabama guide), and the South Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association's is $145 (South Carolina guide). In Tennessee, where certification is optional, health departments in Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville teach food safety free (Tennessee guide).

Both are ANAB-accredited exams with an online proctor, so you can test from home. Confirm that your health department accepts the exam first; a few places, such as Illinois, also require a course.

Pros and Cons by Provider

EduClasses

Pros: the lowest online-proctored exam total we found ($65), a choice of testing online or at a Prometric test center, and English or Spanish. Cons: the $40 proctor fee comes on top of the $25 exam price shown first, remote exams are by appointment only, and its sales pages promise two attempts while its policies say one. Our Food Managers Certification (EduClasses) Review: Is the $65 Exam Legit? covers the details. See EduClasses' exam

Learn2Serve (360training)

Pros: $69.99 with the online proctor included, and two attempts. Cons: English only, not approved for New York City, live proctors only on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central, and a 90-day wait after two failed attempts.

StateFoodSafety

Pros: exams in English, Spanish, and Chinese, online or at a test center, with a published content outline. Cons: $76 online, and missing a scheduled online appointment means paying the $48 proctor fee again.

Always Food Safe

Pros: the course and exam together cost $84 before proctoring, with a free retake, in English or Spanish, and businesses can use their own proctor at no charge. Cons: individuals pay $48 for a remote proctor, and its site doesn't state the question count or passing score.

NRFSP

Pros: the cheapest way to test in person ($36.99 with an NRFSP proctor), and three ways to test: at home, at a Pearson VUE center, or with a local proctor. Cons: no course-and-exam bundle, $8 to $12 extra for remote exams booked less than 72 hours ahead, and no free retake.

ServSafe

Pros: the best-known name, from the National Restaurant Association, with the exam in four languages and at Pearson VUE test centers. Cons: the highest prices here ($99 for the exam, $179 with the course), and every attempt is a new purchase.

Languages vary: ServSafe's online exam comes in English, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and French Canadian; StateFoodSafety's in English, Spanish, and Chinese; NRFSP, EduClasses, and Always Food Safe in English and Spanish; and 360training's in English only. 360training also notes its exam isn't approved for New York City.

Exam Only or Course and Exam?

The exam is the only part that earns the certificate; the course is preparation. If you already work in a kitchen and study well on your own, the exam alone saves $50 to $80. Take a course if it's your first time with manager-level material like HACCP, or if your state or county requires one (Ohio's Level Two certification, for example, requires a course).

A middle path is to study on your own, then buy the exam. Start with our free Food Manager Practice Test to find your weak topics. For drilling the numbers, ServSafe-aligned flashcards help:

Retakes and Other Hidden Costs

  • Retakes usually cost the full exam price. ServSafe requires a new exam purchase for every attempt; NRFSP has no free retake. 360training and Always Food Safe include two attempts; EduClasses advertises two, but its policies say one, with another issued through support.
  • Waiting periods. ServSafe and NRFSP allow two attempts within 30 days, then a 60-day wait, and no more than four attempts in 12 months. 360training makes you wait 90 days after a second failed attempt.
  • Proctor scheduling fees. NRFSP charges $8 to $12 extra for remote exams booked less than 72 hours ahead, and StateFoodSafety charges $48 to reschedule a missed online appointment.
  • Books. The ServSafe Manager Book, 9th edition, is $54.99 from ServSafe if your course or instructor requires it.
  • Unused courses expire. ServSafe says unused online courses are valid for one year from purchase.

Who Pays?

Many employers pay for manager certification, because the health code generally requires the business to have a certified food protection manager. Ask before you buy: your employer may already have a preferred provider, a group rate, or an in-house proctor. California's employer-pays law (SB 476) covers food handler cards, not manager certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does ServSafe Manager certification cost?

$99 for the online-proctored exam, or $179 for the online course and exam together, on ServSafe's website in September 2026. An exam access code for an in-person ServSafe proctor is $38.99, plus the proctor's fee.

What is the cheapest food manager certification?

In our September 2026 check, the lowest online-proctored exam total was EduClasses at $65, followed by 360training at $69.99. In-person options can be cheaper still, such as NRFSP's $36.99 exam with an in-person proctor, though the proctor may charge separately. Make sure your health department accepts the exam.

How long is food manager certification good for?

Usually 5 years; the providers we checked list 5 years or up to 5 years. Some states and counties require renewal sooner.

What score do I need to pass the ServSafe Manager exam?

70%, which means at least 56 of the 80 scored questions, according to ServSafe's FAQ.

Is food manager certification the same as a food handler card?

No. A food handler card is a basic course for any food worker and costs about $7 to $15; see our How Much Does a Food Handler Card Cost? Prices by State and Provider. Manager certification is a proctored, accredited exam for supervisors and costs much more.

Bottom Line

Expect to pay $65 to $99 for an online-proctored manager exam, or about $109 to $189 with a course. ServSafe is the priciest of the major options, but its certificate is the best known.
