Food Handler Card Lookup: How to Verify or Find a Certificate

Quick answer: there's no national food handler card database. Where you look depends on who issued the card. Most cards come from an online training provider, so you verify or reprint them through that provider. A few states and counties run their own card programs with their own lookups, including Washington and Southern Nevada (Las Vegas), and Texas, Illinois, Washington, and Oregon have official lookups for alcohol server certifications.

Below are the official tools, what each one asks for, and who can use it. We link only to the agencies and providers themselves. Enter personal details, such as the Social Security number TABC's lookup asks for, only on the official site.

Training Provider Certificates

Most online courses issue the certificate themselves, so the provider is where you check it. Most have a free public lookup that needs the name and certificate number printed on the card; a few verify only on request.

For Employers: Checking a New Hire's Card

  1. Find out who issued it. The provider or agency name is on the card. A card from the wrong program may not count where you are: Washington, Southern Nevada, and Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties accept only their own cards.
  2. Check it with the issuer. Use the state or county lookup above where there is one; otherwise use the provider's verification page.
  3. Check the expiration date. An expired card generally doesn't count. Our When Does My Food Handler Card Expire? Expiration Calculator works out the date if only the issue date is printed.
  4. Keep a copy on file. Inspectors may ask to see your staff's cards or training records.

Can't Find Your Card?

You rarely need to retake the course just because you lost the card. Search your email, log back in to the provider, or contact the agency that issued it. Our How to Renew a Food Handler Card (or Replace a Lost One) walks through each option, including replacement fees. If the card has expired, the same guide covers renewing.

Renewing? Take an accredited course online

In most places, renewing means taking an accredited course and its test again. Both of these courses are ANAB-accredited, which California, Texas, and Illinois accept. They don't count everywhere: Washington, Oregon, Utah, Florida, Ohio, Southern Nevada (Las Vegas), and a few California counties require their own or state-approved programs, so check your state's renewal rule first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a national food handler card lookup?

No. Each training provider and each state or county program keeps its own records, so you look the card up with whoever issued it.

Can I look up my food handler card by name?

Sometimes. Washington's card verification site and Southern Nevada's lookup search by name with your birth date or card number, and Illinois BASSET, Washington MAST, and Oregon OLCC lookups search by name too. For a card from an online course, log in to the provider or use its certificate lookup.

How do I check if a TABC certificate is valid?

Use TABC's Certificate Inquiry with the server's Social Security number and date of birth. New certificates can take about 14 days to appear.

How can an employer verify a California RBS certification?

Through the ABC's RBS Portal, with a License Administrator account, by searching the server's Server ID number and last name. There's no public lookup, and the ABC doesn't issue paper certificates.

Why can't I find my card in the lookup?

The name may not match exactly as printed, the card may be too new to appear (TABC certificates take about 14 days), it may have expired, or it may have come from a provider rather than the agency. Try the provider that trained you, or the agency's contact line.

Bottom Line

Start with whoever issued the card: the state or county for Washington, Las Vegas, and a few California counties; the liquor agency for alcohol server permits; and the training provider for everything else. Then note the expiration date so you don't have to look it up in a hurry.
